3 Things To Consider When Shopping For An Engagement Ring

Whether you’re about to get proposed to or are contemplating popping the question to the love of your life, it’s important that you think about a few things before you finally get that engagement ring.

So to help ensure that you cover all of your bases during the shopping and purchasing processes and that you’re able to get the right ring and the right price, here are three things to consider when shopping for an engagement ring.

Solidify Your Budget

One of the first logistic things that you and your partner should figure out before you actually start shopping for an engagement ring is what type of budget you’re working with.

According to Ellen Hoffman, a contributor to Business Insider, people used to say that you should spend two to three month’s salary on an engagement ring. However, this is kind of an outdated way of thinking about your budget for an engagement ring.

On average, Hoffman shares that people spend about $5,800 on an engagement ring. But if something in this range doesn’t work for you, either because you can’t afford it or you’re wanting something a little more extravagant, make sure both you and your partner are on the same page regarding your finances before you begin your hunt for the perfect ring.

Know The Basic Characteristics You Want

The financial aspect isn’t the only thing you should be considering when shopping for an engagement ring. Ideally, you should be able to find a ring that perfectly represents your partner and the love you have for one another. But when you’re to make your proposal a surprise, getting the ring right can be a challenge.

To make this easier, Jacqueline Weppner and Elizabeth Mitchell, contributors to Brides.com, advise that you get to know the basics of what you want out of an engagement ring. This should include things like that shape, type of metal for the band, the carat size, the setting, and the ring size. With these things in mind, you should be able to find an engagement ring that you can feel confident that your future fiance will love.

Start Shopping Way Before The Proposal

Because you might not be able to find the perfect engagement ring that’s already made and ready to go, you might wind up going with a custom engagement ring instead.

In a situation like this, The Knot shares that you should give yourself at least six weeks until the ring is ready for you to pick up. So if you’re wanting to have the engagement ring by a certain time so you can propose, make sure you start shopping well before that date.

If you’re going to be shopping for an engagement ring soon, consider the topics mentioned above before you go on your first shopping trip.
